Confederate Jasmine Hedge Plants Description

This truly lovely shrub is a stunning addition to any garden, with glossy, green leaves, dense habit and small, white, pinwheel-like flowers that appear in abundant clusters throughout summer. Noted for its exceptional fragrance and diverse use as either a climbing, twining vine or a low level, spreading ground cover plant, Star Jasmine, known also as Confederate Jasmine or Chinese Ivy, is both popular and beautiful, adorning any garden or home.

It is particularly effective at providing screening for walls or fences and ideal for framing over trellises, arbors and pergolas but will also grow contentedly in containers via a cane framework.

The plant will thrive in most soils, ideally moist but well drained and will even tolerate some drought. It benefits from a full-sun, fairly sheltered location although it will also grow and flower in partial shade. Once established, it is fast growing, spreading to 1.5m in width and when trained as a climber, can reach up to 9m.

Due to the spreading nature of Star Jasmine, a planting distance of 1m to 1.5m width apart is recommended. Ideally, plant in soil where compost and leaf mould has been dug in beforehand. Placing a couple of inches of mulch on top of the soil after planting will also help to retain moisture which is essential whilst the plant establishes. Fertilise only in the spring and if required, indicated by yellowing or paling green leaves.

These plants are available all year round.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.

Pruning Advice
Pruning Advice

Jasmine Star (Trachelospermum Jasminoides) equires only minimal initial training as a climber, after which it grows happily over framework without much intervention; lateral growth can be encouraged by pinching out the tips of the plant. Pruning, if necessary, should be carried out after flowering to keep growth contained to the required height and shape. Planting density/distance is as shown but you can vary this depending on your budget and level of patience.
