Trachelospermum jasminoides Hedge Plant Description
Trachelospermum jasminoides is a striking shrub that makes a stunning addition to any garden. Star Jasmine boasts beautiful glossy, green leaves, a dense habit and small, white, pinwheel-like flowers that appear in abundant clusters throughout the summer months. Star Jasmine is recognised for its remarkable fragrance and diverse use as either a climbing, twining vine or a low-level, spreading ground cover plant.
Other common names for Star Jasmine include Confederate Jasmine or Chinese Ivy, however it is the same popular and beautiful plant and is sure to embellish any outdoor space
Star Jasmine has similar qualities to Irish Ivy. They are both particularly useful at providing screening for walls or fences, and are ideal for framing over trellises, arbors and pergolas. Trachelospermum jasminoiodes will also grow contentedly in containers via a cane framework.
Trachelospermum jasminoides will thrive in most soills but prefers moist and well-drined conditions. It will also tolerate some drought. Star Jasmine benefits more from a full-sun, relatively sheltered location, however, this hedge plant will also grow and flower in partial shade. Once established, it is fast growing, spreading to 1.5m in width and can reach up to 9m when trained as a climber.
Due to the spreading nature of Star Jasmine, a planting distance of 1m to 1.5m width apart is recommended. Ideally, we recommend planting Trachelospermum jasminoides in soil where compost and leaf mould has been dug in beforehand. Placing a couple of inches of mulch on top of the soil after planting will also help to retain moisture, which is essential while the plant establishes. Fertilise only in the spring if required, indicated by yellowing or paling green leaves.
If you are looking for a more established hedge look or garden screening, Star Jasmine is also available as a 180cm high x 120cm wide instant hedging screen.. All of our hedging screens are grown in troughs with several plants growing to cover a galvanised steel frame. They are both space-saving and cost-effective, giving you all the lovely aesthetics of a Star Jasmine hedge complete with the privacy and security of a fence. The Star Jasmine screen is just one of the range of hedging screens available. Visit our Instant Hedging Screens page for more information.
Star Jasmine is available all year round.
Youll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long youre willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.
For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section
Jasmine Star (Trachelospermum Jasminoides) equires only minimal initial training as a climber, after which it grows happily over framework without much intervention; lateral growth can be encouraged by pinching out the tips of the plant. Pruning, if necessary, should be carried out after flowering to keep growth contained to the required height and shape. Planting density/distance is as shown but you can vary this depending on your budget and level of patience.
