English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) was the basis of the England's lavender oil industry in the 1700s. A beautiful, fragrant evergreen plant for compact hedges in contemporary design or traditional cottage displays.

Lavender scent is often used to deter pests from other host plants. The grey green leaves are aromatic and the flower spikes are famous for their perfume. Lavender flowers from midsummer attracting butterflies, bees and other winged insects which then attracts wild birds.

English Lavender plants are a popular variety of Lavender hedging, but we do also have the following additional varieties for sale - Lavender Hidcote, French Lavender,White Lavender, and Dwarf Lavender. See also our entire range of low growing hedge plants for additional varieties.

Additional Information for Old English Lavender Hedge

Lavandula angustifolia vs Lavandula officinalis

Lavandula officinalis was the name given to our English or True Lavender for its medicinal purposes. The word officinalis is a Latin term referring to substances or organisms with uses in medicine or herbalism. Lavandula angustifolia and officinalis are, for all intents and purposes, the very same thing.

Lavender hedge height

English Lavender will achieve up to 3 feet in height if allowed. It can easily be kept to 1 foot if maintained and most lavender hedge heights are between 1.5 and 2 feet.

How to grow a lavender hedge

Growing Lavender angustifolia couldnt be easier. It makes the ideal companion for courtyards, gravel gardens, poor soils and front gardens due to its petite nature and unmistakeable fragrance.

Lavender hedge spacing

We're often asked 'How far apart do you plant Lavender?' the answer to which is very much a matter of choice. Firstly, when creating a Lavender hedge you'll need to consider the finish effect. Do you want a solid row of plants to create a uniform barrier? Or a series of 'bumps' as so often seen in the country gardens of France. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at higher density. Cell grown, P7s and P9s (7cm and 9cm pots) should be planted at 4 per metre in a single row or 6 per metre in a staggered row but, particularly with Lavender angustifolia planting distance, you could consider planting more densely. Planting density for pot grown is as shown next to the product specification above but you can vary this depending on your budget and the time in which youd like to see results. See also our Advice section on Planting Density for more information to help you with lavender hedge spacing.

Lavender hedge planting

Lavender hedge plants prefer full sun, ideally south or west facing. Suitable for seaside gardens and poor or moderately fertile, well drained alkaline soil English Lavender makes a popular, hardy hedging plant. Once established they are drought tolerant and they certainly do not like to be waterlogged or to sit in wet soil - plant on a soil ridge to avoid roots sitting in wet soil. When planting in containers, ensure plenty of drainage. Mix your planting matter (50% good organic matter 50% John Innes no.3) with some very coarse grit and scatter large pebbles or broken pots at the bottom of the container to allow for water run-off. Always plant with Rootgrow to help your Lavender establish.

When do you prune Lavender?

Lavender is very easy to cultivate but the key to its longevity is pruning. This should be done as soon as the flowers start to fade in August - they can handle a hard pruning and we recommend removing one third of the plant, not just the flower spikes. Small shoots will grow a further 5cm before the plants start to go dormant in September, giving them a lush, tidy appearance through Winter. This makes your Lavender hedge pruning routine vital for the appearance of your Lavender hedge in winter. Alternatively, you can leave the spent flower heads on the plants until spring because in winter, when food for birds is scarce, birds will come to feed on the seeds - goldfinches in particular! Plants might eventually become wooded and straggly so it is best to replace a hedge after about 20 years though this is not always necessary.

Lavandula angustifolia care

Aside from the regular pruning Lavenders need little care. Consider a seaweed fertiliser in spring and Bonemeal once or twice throughout the year. Otherwise, simply sit back and enjoy the sweet fragrance.

Buying Lavandula angustifolia

These Lavender plants are available to buy all year round - plants bought in autumn, winter or spring will flower during the first summer. We grow the ever popular Munstead variety but can, at times, substitute for other English Lavender varieties depending on season and availability. If you specifically require Lavender Munstead, please let us know. All of our plants are hand checked for quality, your satisfaction is our absolute aim, so if youre not happy we want to hear from you! (though were proud to say we get very few complaints)
