Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis)

Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) hedge plants description

Bay Laurel hedging plants
From 5.99 | In stock
See hedging sizes and prices below or click here

Bay Laurel's (Laurus nobilis) aromatic glossy dark green leaves make it a beautiful plant for hedging, topiary or as a specimen. It is one of the oldest shrubs in cultivation, originates from the Mediterranean, is also known as Sweet Bay and of course it is the source of the bay leaves used fresh or dried in cooking. It is slow growing and only needs a light trim in summer to keep it in shape.
More information on Laurel hedging

Learn more about the Laurel familly >

Bay Laurel is fully evergreen, likes a fertile, moist well drained soil and sun or partial shade. It is quite tender and needs to be positioned in a sheltered spot and given some stem protection in cold weather. If the situation is not suitable for Bay Laurel, then Portuguese Laurel, which has a similar appearance and slowish growth rate but is much hardier, is a good alternative, even for very formal hedges - for even more options suitable for tricky growing sites, view our broad collection of plants for exposed sites.

Bay Laurel is a popular variety of Laurel hedging, but we do also have the following additional varieties - Cherry Laurel, Portuguese Laurel, Spotted Laurel, Laurel Etna, Compact Laurel and Laurel Caucasica.

See our entire collection of scented hedge plants for species that will fill a garden with incredible smells.

Prices shown are the price per plant. Recommended planting densities are shown but this is very much a matter of choice and you can increase or reduce the density depending on your level of patience. See also our Advice section on Planting Density on the right hand side of our website.

Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) topiary trees

For topiary items, shown at the bottom of this listing, we have only shown the prices for smaller Bay Laurel topiary - but we have a full range of much larger plants. Please phone for a quote on 01257 263873 if what you are looking for is not listed. The sizes shown are approximate (but they're very close) and if you order more than one plant we will do our best to select good matches but do not absolutely guarantee perfectly matched plants. If you do want perfectly matched plants, please check with us by phone before ordering. We also have a Topiary section near the top of the right hand menu where you'll see a full listing of all the topiary species and shapes we sell and advice on topiary trimming.

Whilst all topiary is expensive, it's worth bearing in mind that these are all very mature plants (some of our Bay Laurel standards are 10 years old), and the maintenance involved in making them into topiary is extensive - maybe 30 separate trims to get it to a good topiary shape plus the usual regular repotting, watering (every day), weeding and feeding that goes into every pot grown plant.

All plants shown in this section are available all year round.

If you have any questions on this species, please contact us. You can phone us on 01257 263873 (we're here 7 days a week, until 7pm weekdays in peak autumn and spring seasons), email us at helpdesk@hedgesdirect.co.uk or if you'd like to speak on the phone but would like us to pay for the phone call (and why not!) then use our Request a Call Back facility. Just put your phone number in the subject area of this email address requestacallback@hedgesdirect.co.uk and one of our experienced advisors will call you back within 15 minutes.

New ranges of topiary, turf, topsoil, ornamental trees and perennial border plants now available - all at free delivery on orders over 100.
