Aucuba japonica 'Crotonifolia' Hedge Plants Description
Aucuba japonica 'Crotonifolia' showcase colour and structure throughout the year and are perfect if you're looking for formal hedging. Spotted Laurel is pollution tolerant and suitable in urban and suburban gardens. The average growth rate for Spotted Laurel hedging is 20-40cm p.a. and they should be trimmed to shape, if required, in lthe spring.
Spotted Laurel is a reliable garden shrub that will grow well in most soils and, unlike most variegated species, it won't lose its variegation even in shaded areas. Please note, Aucuba japonica crotonifolia is not suitable for seaside gardens, alkaline soil or particularly wet sites.
The Laurel hedging family, except for Bay Laurel), has harmful leaves and berries if eaten. However if you are looking for a shrub that produces edible berries, we have a variety of hedges with berries available.
Spotted Laurel is a popular variety of Laurel hedging, but we do have other species available, including Cherry Laurel, Portuguese Laurel, Laurel Etna, Compact Laurel and Laurel Caucasical. Take a look at our Laurel Hedging Guide for more information.
We also have an extensive collection of hedging with colourful foliage and evergreen hedging plants available to buy online.
Aucuba japonica 'Crotonifolia' and the Laurel Hedging family are available all year round.
Youll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long youre willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.
For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section
Spotted Laurel is slow growing so requires minimal pruning. Any pruning should be done around April or May.
