Spotted Laurel Hedge Plants Description

Spotted Laurels give colour and structure throughout the year and are ideal for a formal hedge. Spotted Laurel are pollution tolerant so particularly suited to urban and suburban gardens. Average growth is 20-30 cm p.a., and they should be trimmed to shape in late Summer.

This is a very reliable shrub which will grow well in most soils and, unlike most variegated species will not lose its variegation even in shade, but is not suitable for seaside gardens, alkaline soil or particularly wet sites. Like other Laurel varieties (other than Bay Laurel), the leaves and berries are harmful if eaten. See more options in our hedges with berries section.

You can view our whole selection of hedging plants for shade here.

Spotted Laurel is a popular variety of Laurel hedging, but we do also have the following additional varieties - Cherry Laurel, Portuguese Laurel, Laurel Etna, Compact Laurel, Laurel Caucasica and Bay Laurel.. See our Laurel Hedging Guide for more information.

You can also view our entire collection of hedging with colourful foliage here.

These plants are available all year. See also our wide range of evergreen hedging plants.

Further Information

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.

Pruning Advice
Pruning Advice

Spotted Laurel is slow growing so requires minimal pruning. Any pruning should be done around April or May.
