Description

Pyracantha 'Orange Glow' is a striking evergreen shrub that’s gifted with many names. You might also know it as Orange Firethorn, Orange Berries, or Orange Pyracantha because of its spectacular displays of vivid berries that appear from autumn into winter. In late spring, the shrub is adorned with creamy-white, fragrant flowers that transform into these vibrant berries, offering a feast for the eyes and the local wildlife. Orange Pyracantha’s fruits provide essential food for birds in the colder months, while also attracting a plethora of insects and pollinators to your garden.

Growing at a rate of approximately 50cm per year, 'Orange Glow' is fast-growing yet manageable. It’s hardy and tough, making it an excellent choice for creating vibrant, low-maintenance hedges that add colour and character to any landscape.

It thrives in most soil types and is tolerant of sun or partial shade, although it’s not recommended for very windy sites or dense shade. Its network of spiny, armoured stems makes it a fantastic intruder-proof hedge and provides a secure nesting site for small birds.

Pyracantha Orange Berries ('Orange Glow') Hedge Plants Description Orange Pyracantha, also known as Firethorn, is a dense, spiny evergreen shrub which makes an excellent intruder deterrent. This variety is also chosen for its abundant bright-orange berry clusters that provide colour through autumn into winter, and food for native bird species. In late spring, creamy-white, highly scented flowers bloom profusely across the plant and attract a host of insects and pollinators. It is a tough, hardy plant which grows quite quickly (approx 50cm p.a.) and should be pruned after flowering to expose the spent flowers, which will become berries, to sunshine. We also have Red and Yellow varieties of Pyracantha, as well as an additional variety which we have available in the form of an instant hedging screen, for a ready-grown hedge look but with the added privacy and security of a fence. Pyracantha is very easy to grow in most soils and sun or partial shade but is not suitable for seaside gardens, very dense shade, or very windy sites. The network of armoured stems makes it a great nesting site for small birds - with "breakfast in bed" in Winter when they feast on the ripe berries. We also sell a range of other hedging species with berries, as well as varieties suitable for intruder-proof hedging. See our Pyracantha hedging guide for more information. *Please note that in accordance with DEFRA regulations, we are unable to dispatch this species to anywhere outside of the UK Mainland.

Pruning Advice

The best time to prune Pyracantha 'Orange Glow' is just after the flowering period in late spring, as you’ll be able to cut back the stems that aren’t producing to give them a helping hand and encourage new growth the following year. Lightly trim the outermost stems to maintain Pyracantha Orange Berries’ appearance, but also keep an eye out for any older stems coming from the centre and trim a few (but not all) to help improve air circulation and prevent diseases.

If your Orange Firethorn has become overgrown or unruly, it can withstand a hard prune, which can be done anytime between March and October. While it may take some time to regain its full splendour, this resilient shrub will bounce back.
