Topiary

Topiary is the art of clipping trees and shrubs into symmetrical shapes to create ornamental garden features. Dating back to ancient Egypt, this garden tradition adds structure and charm to outdoor spaces. At Hedges Direct, we’ve got topiary shapes to suit every style, from classic topiary balls to stunning spirals and cones. Choose from popular species like Box, Yew, Photinia, and Ilex crenata. Most of our topiary thrives in containers, making them a great fit for patios and urban gardens as well as classic landscaping. Explore our topiary trees to find that perfect piece to transform your garden.

Popular topiary shapes and uses

Topiary plants come in a range of shapes that can be used in different ways:

  • Lollipops or standards – Some of our most popular topiary shapes that effortlessly add height and structure to your garden. Topiary lollipops are an excellent way to frame doorways to welcome guests or as a statement patio piece.
  • Balls and spirals — Often placed on either side of a front door, these shapes create a welcoming focal point. They're also perfect for flanking gates or long driveways, giving a warm and inviting feel.
  • Cones and pyramids — Best for lining driveways or garden borders, cones and pyramids, especially Box or Yew varieties, provide a structured, sophisticated look that's a favourite in formal garden settings.

Caring for topiary plants

Topiary plants are surprisingly easy to care for with a little attention.

Water them – at soil level to prevent adding lots of moisture to the foliage, which can lead to infection – once or twice a week. This ensures the soil stays moist but not waterlogged, especially during warmer months. You should also be trimming your topiary every four to six weeks during the growing season to keep their shape neat and dense.

Most topiary prefers a spot with plenty of sunlight and benefits from a slow-release fertiliser in spring.

Don’t forget to protect your topiary from extreme weather — wrapping them in frost cloth or fleece during winter can help keep them looking their best year-round!
