Photinia Red Robin Hedge Plants Description

If you're looking for year-round interest in your garden, Photinia Red Robin is the hedging plant for you. With clusters of delicate white flowers and vivid, scarlet leaves in spring that transform into a striking deep green in winter, Photinia Red Robin will truly stand out in your garden.

Photinia 'Red Robin' isn't an overly dense shrub, however, being evergreen and with fairly large leaves, it can still offer a good degree of privacy. It has an average growth rate of 30cm per annum, and can easily be maintained up to a height of 4m - either trim to a formal hedge shape in spring or summer or leave informal, just with a little trim as and when it's needed.

Although Photinia prefers sunny conditions, it can still grow well in partial shade and thrives in well-drained soil. It's resilient against frost, but young plants should be protected during the winter.

It's worth noting that Photinia Red Robin can be prone to occasional leaf drop, so if this happens, carefully prune it back and apply a slow-release fertiliser during the spring, watering it if necessary. With the correct care, you'll be rewarded with vigorous, vibrant regrowth.

If you'd like a more low-growing and compact version of Photinia, we also have Photinia 'Little Red Robin,' which is smaller but still has big impact.

What are root types?

x

Root types explained.

  • Bare root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
