Topiary Balls

Nothing brings sophistication and character to your garden like topiary balls. Known for their perfectly sculpted, spherical shape, topiary balls create an elegant feature that can transform any outdoor space. Whether you choose evergreen hedge balls in varieties like Box, Yew, or Holly, these topiary shapes are ideal for creating neat, symmetrical borders or as striking standalone pieces that bring interest to your garden, patio, or driveway all year round.

For a modern feel, place them in containers on either side of your front door or combine them with softer plants like grasses for an eye-catching contrast and added dimension to your garden. If you need something small to fit into those awkward-to-fill spots, we stock smaller topiary balls in 3-5L pots but also carry large topiary balls in 15L pots.

Why choose topiary balls for your garden?

Topiary is famous for its versatile shapes, so here are a few reasons why topiary balls could be a great fit for your space:

Perfect for symmetry — The neat, round shape is ideal for creating symmetrical designs, adding balance and harmony to your garden.
Great for small spaces — Topiary balls come in a range of sizes, and more compact variations are perfect for adding a formal touch to smaller gardens, balconies, or patios.
Year-round interest — Evergreen varieties keep their dense, lush foliage throughout the year, making them an attractive option for all seasons.

How to care for your topiary balls

Topiary balls are relatively easy to care for, but a little attention goes a long way in keeping them neat. Start by watering regularly during the growing season, but ensure the soil is well-drained to avoid waterlogging. In spring, give your plants a boost of balanced plant food to encourage healthy, vibrant growth.

To maintain their round shape, lightly trim your topiary balls during the growing season, often in May or June. If needed, give them a second prune in late summertime to keep on top of their shape — but avoid doing this any later than August so any new shoots can harden before the cooler winter weather.

Choosing the best species for your topiary

Here at Hedges Direct, we stock topiary in a variety of species. Learn more about them below:

Box (Buxus sempervirens) – Classic and compact, Box topiary balls are a timeless choice, perfect for formal gardens and hedging. Their dense foliage responds well to regular pruning, keeping the shape beautifully sculpted.
Holly (Ilex aquifolium) – For a bold, spiky look, Holly topiary balls are the epitome of evergreen beauty, with glossy green leaves and bright red berries in winter.
Yew (Taxus baccata) – Slow-growing and elegant, Yew topiary balls bring a refined, classic look to your garden. Best for formal settings, their dark green leaves create a striking contrast with plants that have lighter-coloured foliage.
Photinia (Photinia fraseri) – For a colourful option, Photinia topiary balls bring bright red new growth that gradually turns deep green — perfect for adding seasonal colour.
