Hedges Direct and DIY SOS - Helping 'True Colours' in Wallsend

The popular renovation show, presented by Nick Knowles and his team, relies on the generosity of the local community, tradespeople and suppliers to help transform the lives of deserving people and projects.

Nick Knowles and his crew embarked on a project to convert an abandoned old boys' club into a nurturing haven for True Colours, a charity that embraces children and young adults of all abilities, offering them a place to unleash their creativity. ‘True Colours’ teach dance and theatre skills to 500 children & young adults weekly, many of whom have additional learning needs.

Ensuring that the build fulfills all the requirements of a dance school and beyond were Strictly Come Dancing professionals enlisted by judge Anton Du Beke. Trading the glamorous Strictly ballroom for a construction site and dedicating time to get to know some of the members of True Colours were Katya Jones, Luba Mushtuk, Graziano Di Prima, and Nancy Xu.

Members of the Hedges Direct staff team travelled to Newcastle for the big reveal day and celebrated the inspiring achievements of the build team and local community.

The True Colours Garden

Thanks to plants donated by Hedges Direct, the outside area was transformed from a car park into a stunning space with glittery paved paths and beautifully scented plants and flowers.

Our tall beach hedge plants were used to zone the garden, creating cosy corners and separate performing areas.

Borders were planted with various grasses and tall bamboo, adding some lovely movement and sounds to the garden as they swayed in the breeze.

Fragrant plants including lavender and rosemary were placed amongst the sweeping borders, enhancing the sensory aspect of the garden.
