 | The hedging species that make up these mixed native hedging packs are ideal for paddocks, fields and gardens, with no plants that are poisonous to livestock and a range of species that provide year round interest and a diverse habitat for wildlife. Bare root packs are available from November to early April (Go to bare root packs), cell grown and pot grown packs are available all year round (Go to cell grown packs or pot grown packs) and you can view all the mixed packs by scrolling down or clicking here.About bare root mixed native packs Our recommended mix for bare root native hedging is 50% Hawthorn or Blackthorn (choose Blackthorn for heavy soils or coastal/windy positions and Hawthorn for all others) with 10% each of Wild Cherry, Field Maple, Dog Rose, Hazel and either Hawthorn or Blackthorn (the opposite to the main component). These species have been selected to provide a long period of interest for humans (in flower, berries, leaf colour, leaf shape) as well as varying wildlife foods and shelter. Click to view bare root packs About cell grown mixed native packs Below the bare root packs you will find cell grown mixed native packs which are available all year round. The species mix is very similar. For packs of 100, the base is 40% Hawthorn or Blackthorn, and then the balance is 12% each of Blackthorn or Hawthorn (whichever is not the base) and Hazel, Field Maple, Bird Cherry and Dog Rose. For packs of 250 and 500, the mix is 50% Hawthorn or Blackthorn and 10% each of all the others. Cell grown plants can be used at any time of year other than in very hot dry weather. Click to view cell grown packsAbout pot grown mixed native packs At the bottom of the listing are the pot grown pallet deals of pot grown mixed native hedging which again is available all year round. The mix of species is a bit different to the bare root packs (40% either Hawthorn or Blackthorn, 20% Hornbeam, and 10% each of Field Maple, Hazel, Dog Rose and either Blackthorn or Hawthorn (whichever is not the base of the mix). Click to view pot grown packs Whether it's bare roots, pot grown or cell grown, you can add species to the standard mix, or swap species, or change the proportions. We're happy to accommodate your own "pick and mix" selections which in previous years has been very popular with customers looking for 100% flowering hedges, or high security prickly hedging or an economy mix. Planting distances are very much a matter of choice - for bare roots, 3 plants per metre is adequate, 5 is good, 7 in a double staggered row will give a dense hedge quicker. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at higher density. Cell grown normal planting density is 4 in a single row or 6 in a double row. For pot grown, the ideal is 5 in a double staggered row but 4 or even 3 is adequate - so a pallet deal of 75 plants will do between 15 and 25 metres.
