Berberis julianae Hedging Plants Description
Wintergreen Barberry has an upright form and is fast growing so it quickly forms a dense hedge. The leaves are dark green and glossy, it has plenty of yellow flowers in spring and black/blue fruits in autumn. This is a good species for shady situations, even pretty dry shade and it's good at the coast although it doesn't like wet soil. Growth rate is average - about 30cm pa.
Berberis julianae also has long, strong thorns therefore is ideal to consider if you are looking for an intruder proof hedge with the added bonus of an attractive appearance. For more information on the different types of security hedging available, please visit our Intruder Proof Hedging page.
Other evergreen varieties of Barberry include Berberis darwinii and Berberis stenophylla, see our Berberis Hedging Guide for more information and our range of evergreen hedging plants.
If you would like further advice in order to decide which the right hedge is for you, we'd recommend that you visit our Choosing the Right Species page which has suggestions and alternatives for every wish list, requirement or situation.
