Rosmarinus officinalis
Rosemary is a native of the Mediterranean, so it does best on dry, stony soils, hates to be waterlogged, and does not need or want the addition of organic matter to the soil. Like Bay Laurel, another plant native to the Mediterranean, the leaves of Rosemary are commonly used as herbs when cooking, naturally making this an edible hedging plant.
It's easy to maintain, growing by approx 20-40cm pa, just trim the straggly shoots. You can see Rosemary and a huge selection of low shrubs in our low growing plants page. Rosemary repels carrot fly so its particularly good as an edging hedge in a vegetable garden. Suited to exposed or inland coastal sites, this fragrant plant is ideal for seaside gardens. See also our range of hedging for exposed sites.
Just like the similarly fragrant hedging of Lavender, the small leaves and low growing habit of Rosemary make it a great alternative to Box hedging, particularly in planting areas which are prone to box blight.
These plants are available all year round. See our brilliant range of evergreen hedging plants for year-round cover or take a look at our fragrant and edible sections which includes plants that can accompany Rosemary to create a unique, sensory garden.
