Further Information
You'll see our recommended planting densities for each pot size listed next to the products opposite. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you're willing to wait to see your finished hedge. For pot grown plants as in the case of our range of Ceanothus, for 2 litre pots a good planting density is 3 per metre but you can plant as few as 1 per metre and you can fit in 5 (in a double staggered row) for a quickly established hedge. For the 5 litre pots - a good density is 2 per metre but 1 is perfectly acceptable or 3 if staggered in a double row.
For other pot sizes, just use the above guide to estimate or phone us for advice. It's worth bearing in mind, particularly for tall expensive plants, that you don't need to stick to an exact number. There's nothing wrong with planting 1.5 per metre (2 plants every 3m) if you can't decide between 1 or 2 plants per metre.
For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.

Ceanothus Hedge Plants Description
Native to North America, a Ceanothus hedge will bring a splash of colour to your garden - when it is not in flower, its striking dark green foliage will offer year-round cover. Ceanothus hedging is best suited to fertile, well-drained soils, and this easy-to-maintain shrub can be expected to grow between 20 - 40cm per year.
Ceanothus is known for its wide spreading habit, so it will need to be positioned to allow for growth. It looks particularly effective trained against a wall, in a sheltered, sunny position to ensure best growth, making sure to keep it protected from strong, cold winds, which can harm the plant.
Ceanothus hedge plants are available all year round. If you'd like to take a look at similar species, Hedges Direct has a wide range of flowering hedge plants that are sure to bring beauty and privacy to your home.
Choose Ceanothus Hedging root types
What are root types?
Root types explained.
-
Bare root
Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.
-
Pot grown
Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.
-
Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
-
Instant
Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
