Root types explained.
-
Bare root
Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.
-
Pot grown
Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.
-
Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
-
Instant
Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.

Description
Hypericum Hedge Plant Description
Hypericum Hidcote, commonly known as St John's Wort thanks to its herbal properties, is a charming ornamental shrub that’s native to the UK. Easily recognisable with its vibrant, five-petalled yellow flowers, Hypericum plants add a burst of sunny colour to any garden from May to August. The flowers also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it a great choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Hypericum shrubs are often labelled as semi-evergreen because they tend to shed some foliage during colder winter months, but they’re still a reliable option for year-round interest. Their moderate growth rate of between 20-40cm per year makes them ideal for low hedging, as they can reach up to 1 meter in height.
Hypericum thrives in full sun but can also tolerate some shade. In terms of planting, it’s adaptable to a variety of well-drained soils, including coastal gardens, making it an excellent option for challenging or exposed sites. Head to our hedge planting guide for more information.
Pot-grown Hypericum Hidcote hedging plants are available all year round. Learn about the different root types here, or visit our planting guide for tips on what to do when your St John's Wort plant arrives.

Pruning Advice
The best time to prune your Hypericum Hidcote is in early spring. Start by removing any weak, old, or thin growth, and cut the remaining stems back to the base or to strong, healthy shoots. Always make your cuts just above a bud to encourage fresh growth.
If your Hypericum has become overgrown, you can prune all stems back to ground level to rejuvenate the plant and encourage new, vigorous growth for the coming season. After pruning, apply a mulch and feed to the plant to encourage its recovery and healthy new growth.
