Prunus cerasus 'Morello'

The Morello cherry tree is renowned for its large, deep red cherries, celebrated for their robust flavour, making them ideal for jams, jellies, and desserts such as open-top cherry pies or crumbles. In spring, the tree is adorned with pretty pure white single flowers, which are followed by fruits that ripen from late July to early August. Known as sour cherries, Morello cherries can be used fresh or frozen for later culinary use. This hardy cherry tree, which has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit, is exceptionally resilient and perfect for planting against a north-facing wall. As a self-fertile variety, Morello does not require another cherry tree for pollination, making it a convenient choice for both gardens and orchards.

The Morello cherry tree thrives against north or east-facing walls, producing large, juicy fruits with a bittersweet flavour when ripe. These round, dark red cherries have soft flesh, making them superb for pies, cooking, and bottling. The tree is moderately vigorous and easy to manage, yielding heavy and regular crops ready for picking from August to September. As a self-fertile variety, the Morello cherry can be grown independently without the need for other pollinators.
