Prunus laurocerasus Otto Luyken (Compact Laurel) is a popular, hardy evergreen laurel. The dense upright-growing foliage is formed from narrow, dark-green, glossy leaves. In spring, cotton-white flower spikes with intense fragrance adorn the foliage, followed by reddish-black, cherry-like berries in autumn. Due to its compact form, Prunus Otto Luyken makes an excellent privacy hedge.

Compact Laurel Hedge Plants Description

Otto Luyken (Compact Laurel) is a super evergreen compact (up to 1.2m mature height) hedging plant suitable for all soils and situations including shade. It often flowers again in Autumn.

Compact Laurel is quite slow growing, so easy to keep once it reaches the desired height - just clip once a year in late Sept/early Oct. Whilst it will grow to 1.5m, it's very good for hedges between 0.5m and 1.5m. For a taller growing hedge, see our popular range of Cherry Laurel hedging or view our entire slection of evergreen hedge plants for a fantastic choice of Laurel alternatives.

Otto Luyken is a very hardy plant, good in all situations - and will even flower in shade. It's good for coastal positions, windy sites, even north facing spots so very easy indeed to grow in more normal conditions. Like other Laurel varieties (other than Bay Laurel), the leaves and berries are harmful if eaten.

Compact Laurel is a popular variety of Laurel hedging, but we do also have the following additional varieties - Cherry Laurel, Portuguese Laurel, Spotted Laurel, Laurel Etna, Laurel Caucasica and Bay Laurel. For information on all Laurel species, see our Laurel Hedging Guide for more information.

Pot grown plants are available all year round. Bare roots are only available from november to late April/early May. Root Ball plants are available from mid-October to mid-April.

Choose Laurel Hedge - Compact root types

What are root types?

x

Root types explained.

  • Bare root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
