As a general rule, smaller pot plants can be planted up to 6 per metre if planted in a double staggered row. Larger pots will require less plants per metre. Really the planting density is down to how long you would wait to see a hedge with the required fullness. If you want to a fuller hedge in a shorter time, you would plant at the higher density per metre.

Pruning Advice

Osmanthus Burkwoodii is best pruned in late Winter or Early spring. Although slow growing it should be pruned yearly being sure to remove any dead branches.

Osmanthus x burkwoodii Hedge Plants Description

Osmanthus x burkwoodii like many white flowering plants, has a lovely fragrance that carries a good distance, particularly in the evening so this is an ideal hedge to plant near the house/patio. If you trim the hedge after flowering, it will increase the flowering for the following year.

Osmanthus x burkwoodii is classified as fairly hardy but our experience is that it is just a bit tender and not really suitable for NE England/cold parts of Scotland. Please don't be too offput by our warnings on hardiness, it does really well and is a beautiful hedge in most of the UK. See all of our flowering species and fragrant hedging plants.

Osmanthus likes any soil type but must have moist soil and should not be exposed to strong north or east winds which can damage the leaves. Its leaves are finely toothed - but not prickly, its growth rate is slow to average and it will grow (in good conditions) to approx 3m height but is easily kept at much lower heights.

Bare root
Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.
Pot grown
Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.
Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
Instant
Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
