Planting a Leylandii hedge
Leylandii takes nutrients and moisture from the soil so there's a need for a space between the hedge and other shrubs. It likes sun or partial shade, well drained soil and is suitable for seaside gardens.
For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section. Prices shown are the price per plant unless otherwise stated.
Pruning Advice
To keep Leylandii in check, especially if you’re using it as a privacy screen, at least a yearly prune is essential. Cut back the top and sides of the plant during the growing season, which is from April to August. You may even need to give it another light trim later on in the season to avoid it becoming overgrown and shaggy — but be mindful that trimming Leylandii too often can leave it weakened and susceptible to frost and disease.
Leylandii’s quick-growing nature makes it a firm favourite if you’re after a fast-growing privacy screen, but Leyland Cypress hedge owners must make sure that it’s not overgrowing to the point where it’s impacting neighbouring properties, particularly in urban areas. If Leylandii becomes overgrown and gets too tall, it could infringe on the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003. The act gives people the chance to resolve a high hedge dispute without involving lawyers if it’s in close proximity and affects the enjoyment of their property.
While Leylandii hedging can be cut back by up to a third of its height, the golden rule is to never cut it back to the old wood as these plants never regenerate from bare wood.
Don’t forget to always wear protective gloves and long-sleeved clothing when pruning Leylandii, as the foliage can be irritating to the skin.

Choose Leylandii Hedge root types
What are root types?
Root types explained.
-
Bare root
Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.
-
Pot grown
Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.
-
Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
-
Instant
Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
