Planting a Leylandii hedge

Leylandii takes nutrients and moisture from the soil so there's a need for a space between the hedge and other shrubs. It likes sun or partial shade, well drained soil and is suitable for seaside gardens.

Pruning Advice

Leylandii should be trimmed in Spring as soon as the weather warms up, although this can be left until Summer as long as there have been no dry spells and the weather isn't very hot. Also Leylandii will not re-grow from old wood, so it cannot be left to get out of hand and then trimmed down to size.

Cupressocyparis leylandii Hedge Plants Description

Leylandii, also known as Leyland Cypress, is a popular choice of hedge plant amongst those who recognise its superb attributes and are looking for a good hedge height on a small budget. Regular clipping of the mid-green, spray like citrus-scented foliage during midsummer and autumn, can turn Cupressocyparis leylandii into a magnificent, dense, formal garden hedge that is perfect for windbreak, noise reduction and privacy.

Leylandii is the fastest growing of all conifers growing up to 90cm per annum in optimal conditions. It can grow to be very tall indeed, so it is important to keep it to a reasonable height for ease of maintenance and neighbourly relations! However, with regular trimming this is actually very achievable and many people have beautiful Leylandii hedges that are easily maintained at around 5-6ft tall. Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.
Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
Instant
Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
