Cupressocyparis leylandii Hedge Plants Description

With its green, feathery foliage, Leylandii hedging (Cupressocyparis leylandii, (also known as ‘Leyland Cypress’) is a striking evergreen that maintains its colour all year round. These hedges have flattened sprays of dark, scale-like leaves that conceal the plant’s red, ridged bark. During the summer months, this tall conifer produces brown, ball-shaped cones that are toxic if eaten — so keep this plant out of reach of pets and livestock.

Leylandii hedge plants are also valued for their exceptional growth speed, putting on up to 90cm per year as Europe’s fastest-growing hedging species. When left untrimmed, a Leylandii Cypress hedge can reach impressive heights of over 12 metres, creating an excellent privacy screen that keeps prying eyes at bay. With regular pruning however, these plants can be shaped to suit any garden size, and easily kept to a reasonable height. Their dense foliage offers superb wind and noise protection while also providing shelter for birds and other garden wildlife. As an added bonus, these hedges are incredibly hardy, thriving in coastal, exposed, and urban environments and tolerating pollution or strong winds with ease.

Our Leylandii hedging plants are available as pot-grown and root-ball varieties, perfect for planting at any time. Pot-grown Leylandii can be bought all year round, while our root ball plants are ready to go during the plant’s dormant season (from November to late March).* You can learn more about which is right for you with our guide to different root types.

If you’re not sure where to start, our guide to planting hedging breaks the process down into steps that even the most novice gardener can follow.

Root-ball stock are subject to availability and may change, but are generally available from autumn through to spring.

What are root types?

x

Root types explained.

  • Bare root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
