Golden Leylandii Hedge Plants Description

Golden Leylandii, also known as Cupressocyparis Leylandii 'Castlewellan Gold', is a fast-growing, evergreen conifer that brings a bright splash of colour to your garden. With its striking yellow, spray-like foliage, this golden Leylandii is perfect for creating a dense, vibrant hedge that provides year-round interest and privacy. Its gold hue makes it stand out from its faster-growing traditional Leylandii alternative, making it an eye-catching feature, whether planted as a single specimen or as part of a colourful hedge.

While Castlewellan Gold has a reputation for vigorous upright growth, putting on between 40-60cm per year, its size can be easily managed with regular pruning to maintain it as a formal hedge. When trimmed, this conifer makes a wonderful, neatly shaped hedge. For more colourful options, we also stock Monterey Cypress ‘Goldcrest’ hedging with lemon-yellow foliage, or you can also explore our full range of conifer hedging here.

Cupressocyparis Leylandii 'Castlewellan Gold' thrives in various soil types as long as they’re well-draining; the species is adaptable to most garden conditions but will flourish in full sun or partial shade.

You can shop pot-grown gold Leylandii hedge plants all year round. Find out more about root types here, or head over to our hedge planting guide for tips on what to do when your plants arrive.

Pruning Advice

Castlewellan Gold Leylandii should be pruned during the spring or summer months to keep its size in check, encourage new growth, and preserve its bright, yellow colour. However, try not to trim it during dry spells or when the weather is particularly hot, as this can put stress on the plant.
