Pruning Advice
Should you need to hard-prune your Prunus Novita, then March is the time to do this.
Established plants that have become woody can even be taken down to ground level and will come back looking refreshed.
General hedge trimming should be done twice a year, once in early June and again in late September.
It is important to prune at the right time, so as not to remove new growing shoots. You can of course leave Laurel Novita without pruning - which many people choose to do - as the thick, lush leaves can look tatty if too regularly trimmed.

Prunus laurocerasus Novita Hedge Plants Description
Identical in look and characteristics to Cherry Laurel hedging, Prunus 'Novita' is actually a new variety of Cherry Laurel, the difference being it has been cultivated to produce an extremely hardy plant, far more tolerant of weather extremes and growing conditions whilst also more resistant to disease.
Sometimes referred to as Cherry Laurel Novita, this extra hardy evergreen, still has the gorgeous glossy green leaves of common Cherry Laurel with flowers and berries to match at the relevant time of year, however it is now growing in popularity for its adaptability and durability in all conditions. As with standard Cherry Laurel, Prunus laurocerasus Novita is ideal as a privacy screen or to reduce noise and wind.
Prunus 'Novita' hedging has a relatively fast growth rate of around 30 - 60cm per year, making it an economical way to achieve height. It can easily grow to between 20 - 30ft high over time, but it is easy to maintain to a lower height. It grows well in most soil and light conditions, including in shaded areas, and will even grow happily at the coast, unlike Cherry Laurel.. Just like most hedges in the Laurel family - other than Bay Laurel - the leaves and berries are harmful if consumed.
Laurel Novita pot-grown plants are available all year round.
Hedges Direct has a fantastic range of Laurel hedges including Cherry Laurel , Portuguese Laurel, Spotted Laurel, Laurel Etna, Compact Laurel, Laurel Caucasica and Bay Laurel. If you'd like to find out more about Laurel hedging and which would be right for your garden, take a look at our helpful Laurel Hedging Guide.
Choose Laurel Hedge - Laurel 'Novita' root types
What are root types?
Root types explained.
-
Bare root
Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.
-
Pot grown
Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.
-
Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
-
Instant
Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
