Cydonia oblonga 'Vranja'

The Vranja Quince is a small, attractive tree or large deciduous shrub, native to the rocky slopes of Southwestern Asia. It is well-regarded for its gnarled, slightly contorted branches that give the tree a distinctive appearance. In late spring, the Vranja Quince adorns its stems with shallow, bowl-shaped flowers that range in colour from pale pink to white. These blossoms eventually give way to large, pear-shaped fruits, which start off as a pale green before ripening in the autumn to a vibrant golden yellow. The fruits, typically up to 8 cm in length, are highly fragrant but are known for being too bitter and hard to consume fresh. However, when cooked, the flesh softens, turns pink, and becomes ideal for making delicious jams.

The Vranja Quince is a very hardy plant, able to withstand a variety of conditions. However, it thrives best in warmth and sunlight, which are essential for optimal fruit production. In colder climates, it is recommended to train the tree against a south-facing wall to provide the necessary warmth. This tree is particularly well-suited to oriental-style gardens, where its unique form and vibrant fruits can be showcased to great effect. The Vranja Quince has also earned the Award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, reflecting its esteemed status among gardeners.

The foliage of the Vranja Quince is another attractive feature, with leaves that are grey-hairy beneath. The flowers, which can reach up to 5 cm in width, often have a subtle pink tinge, adding to the tree's overall beauty. This combination of appealing flowers, distinctive fruits, and hardy nature makes the Vranja Quince a valuable addition to a variety of garden settings.
