Elaeagnus x ebbingei 'Gilt Edge' Hedge Plants Description
Gilt Edge has beautifully fragrant creamy white flowers in autumn. It is quite fast growing at approx 30-45cm p.a. and should be trimmed to shape in spring. This is a very tough evergreen hedging plant and it performs best in partial shade or sun. It is happy in dry soil, seaside gardens and exposed sites. Combine Oleaster 'Gilt Edge' with an abundance of evergreen plants, as well as other flowering hedging or hedging with berries for an impressive garden feature, full of seasonal characteristics.
With the bright yellow edging to it's leaves, Oleaster 'Gilt Edge' is a variagated version of the fully green leafed Oleaster, not to be confused with the other main variagated variety of Oleaster 'Limelight', whose leaves have a yellow centre and green edge. Like all varieties of Oleaster, Gilt Edge is great for planting in exposed sites. For other hedge varieties with colour in their leaves, see our colourful hedging department.
Youll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long youre willing to wait to see your finished hedge.
As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.
For more information on planting distances please see our
planting density advice section.
Oleaster Gilt Edge should be trimmed in early spring to promote flower production in Autumn.
