You'll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you're willing to wait to see your finished hedge.

As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

Pruning Advice

Oleaster should be trimmed in late summer after flowering if you are forming a hedge. Simply trim out or cut back any diseased, longer or unruly shoots to retain the shaping. In addition, remove any plain green leaved shoots when they appear and cut back to where they emerge from the plant.

Pruning in late summer will however strip out the short spurs which bear fruit. If you wish to harvest the fruit or leave for the wildlife, then pruning should be conducted in mid-spring through April and May.

Oleaster hedge plants, also known as Elaeagnus ebbingei or Silverberry, are one of our favourite species. Oleaster is a tough evergreen shrub that boast small but highly scented creamy white flowers in autumn followed by small orange fruits in spring.

Elaeagnus ebbingei Hedge Plants Description

Unusually, Elaeagnus ebbingei (Oleaster or sometimes referred to as Silverberry) produces subtly fragrant white flowers in autumn and small orange fruits in spring. The leaves are dark green with silver speckles and silver coloured undersides, which look stunning where the wind will blow the leaves to expose the undersides. Elaeagnus ebbingei is quite fast growing at approximately 30-50cm per annum and should be clipped to shape in autumn.

As a sturdy evergreen shrub, Oleaster is ideal for shady, dry, seaside or windy sites but not cold, wet or very alkaline locations. Even so, we classify Elaeagnus ebbingei as being an excellent hedging plant for exposed sites. For similar hedging with variagated foliage, try Oleaster 'Limelight' with yellow patterning in the centre of it's leaves, or Oleaster 'Gilt Edge' which has bright yellow edges to the leaves.

Bare root
Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.
Pot grown
Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.
Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
Instant
Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
