Pruning Advice
If your Weigela plant does not bloom well, it may be that pruning has not been sufficient the previous year or that the wood is too old and thick. In this case, you can rejuvenate the plant by cutting the larger, thicker stems back quite severely to their base to encourage new wood to grow. The best time to do this is January to February when the plant is dormant but not in freezing conditions.
Plants that have not been sufficiently pruned for a number of years and are made up mostly of wood 1 inch in thickness or bigger benefit from being cut back all round to around 4-5" above the soil line after which they can re-establish. This can take a year or two so patience is required. The end result however will be a renewed, healthier plant with more abundant flowers and a good basis for growth year on year as long as regular seasonal pruning is undertaken.

Weigela Hedge Plants Description
Weigela is a flowering deciduous shrub that is popular for its masses of vibrant pink flowers that bloom in spring, lasting into the summer months, as well as its striking cream and mid-green foliage. It's a highly prolific flowerer, making Weigela a truly show-stopping hedge.
Weigela is a relatively slow-growing plant, with a growth rate of around 20cm - 40cm per year, so it can take some time to grow into a hedge, but with a little patience it does make a truly beautiful informal garden hedge. Weigela also works well as a border shrub, offering year-round interest and attracting bumblebees and butterflies when its flowers are in blossom.
Loved by novice gardeners and busy people alike, Weigela is incredibly low-maintenance as it is easy to grow and maintain. It grows well in all soil types, although it should be well-drained and fertile. Although it thrives in the sun, Weigela can also tolerate partial shade, and grows well in both exposed or sheltered locations.
Choose Weigela Hedge root types
What are root types?
Root types explained.
-
Bare root
Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.
-
Pot grown
Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.
-
Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
-
Instant
Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
