Vinca major 2L Pot Greater Periwinkle
In stock
Greater Periwinkle
Vinca major, commonly known as the Greater Periwinkle, is a slender-stemmed, creeping evergreen plant belonging to the Apocynaceae family. This versatile ground cover is ideal for a wide range of conditions, thriving in environments from full sun to dense shade, even under the canopy of large trees. Its adaptability makes it an excellent choice for areas where other plants might struggle.
The plant is noted for its large, blue-violet or dark violet flowers, which appear on arching shoots from April through September. These vibrant blooms are complemented by dark green, glossy leaves, creating a striking contrast. As a prostrate, evergreen shrub, Vinca major is particularly effective at suppressing weeds, making it a practical option for covering sloping banks or bare ground beneath trees.
Due to its vigorous growth habit, Vinca major is best suited to larger gardens where it can spread without overwhelming the space. For smaller gardens, Vinca minor may be a more appropriate choice. The plant forms a dense mat of foliage, with long, rooting stems that enhance its effectiveness as ground cover, ensuring it quickly establishes a lush, green carpet. The erect stems bear glossy, ovate leaves, and solitary violet-blue flowers, each approximately 4cm wide, adding to the plant’s overall appeal in the landscape.
