Eastern Hemlock

What is a Mature Pleached Tree?!

The term 'pleached' refers to trees that are trained to form a screen of branches and foliage a single straight stem. The single stem of our pleached trees are between 1.8 and 2.2m tall. Planted in rows at set distances, they will form an elevated 'green wall' that can be ideal as a green alternative to high fencing. Pleached trees are often used to screen unsightly buildings and can be grown above an existing wall or fence. Used in this way pleached trees can extend the height of a privacy screen to 3 metres or more.

Mature pleached trees are established trees with full growth development on the cane head structure compared to the fresh pleached versions. Having been carefully nurtured and trained over an extended period of time, these stunning specimens are immediately impressive with beautiful, dense screens that when in full leaf, offer shade and privacy immediately on planting.

Species Information

Tsuga canadensis, commonly known as Eastern Hemlock is an evergreen conifer tree variety originally native to North America. It has needle-like foliage not dissimilar to Yew yet much smaller with a softer aesthetic and in autumn, the tree develops small, brown oval cones for additional seasonal interest. The deep-green leaves form dense, flattened and gently drooping sprays of foliage and have a very pale underside whilst the bark is brownish-grey with furrows that become deeper with age, all of which gives this tree abundant character and visual interest. Being evergreen, Tsuga canadensis retains its foliage year-round therefore it is an excellent choice for those looking for privacy screening in particular.

Tsuga canadensis is considered very low maintenance and doesn't require much by way of pruning, unless it's to remove damaged or dead branches. In fact, it is usually appreciated for its more informal, natural shaping retaining a softer aesthetic. It's also important to note that unlike other Hemlock varieties, Tsuga canadensis is a non-poisonous form of Hemlock and will thrive in cool, humid conditions, yet is considered exceptionally hardy, able to tolerate the harshest of winters.
