Pink Rosa rugosa Hedge Plants Description

Rosa rugosa rubra will add colour and wildlife interest into a mixed hedge, or for its prickly deterrent quality. It has richly scented, large open single pink flowers from June to September, followed by the largest hip of any wild rose - as large as a cherry tomato! For an alternative with white flowers, try Rosa rugosa 'Alba'.

The leaves are lush, glossy, dark green and crinkly (the technical term is rugose) and downy underneath. The plant grows very densely with new growth coming from below ground level but true to the parent.

It has to be said that Rosa rugosa has a shaggy unkempt air though it can be trimmed to a degree of tidiness. It's carefree too in its soil and situation preferences - it's picky only about drainage - so as long as it doesn't sit in waterlogged soil, it will grow in any situation with particular preferences for some sun and sandy soils. It is good for coastal positions and is sometimes called the Saltspray Rose. One final bonus - rabbits don't like it!

For further flowering varieties, have look at our brilliant range of flowering hedge plants or view our prickly hedging plants and our hedges with berries for a number of brilliant alternatives.

Cell grown plants are available all year round whilst bare roots are only available from November to mid/late May, using cold stored plants towards the very end of the season.

What are root types?

x

Root types explained.

  • Bare root

Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.

  • Pot grown

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

  • Root ball

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

  • Instant

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
