Pruning Advice
To keep your Photinia Red Robin looking vibrant, prune it once each year in early spring, around March and definitely before new buds have started to form, or in June to deadhead any dying flowers. This will help it to maintain its shape and stimulate the growth of new red shoots.
If your Photinia fraseri ‘Red Robin’ is still maturing, you can skip pruning for a year or two to allow it to establish. However, if it’s starting to look a little untidy or congested, give it a light trim to neaten up and allow sunlight into the heart of the plant which helps new shoots grow.
As Photinia Red Robin has a fast growth rate, stems can be cut back by up to 15cm, but it’s fairly tolerant of a hard prune if it gets overgrown. An annual prune is fine if you’re after a fuller and bushier look, but it can be lightly trimmed up to three times a year for a neater appearance – but be mindful of trimming it any later than June as this can make it vulnerable to frosts when they arrive.
