Malus domestica 'Laxton's Superb'
Laxton's Superb is a late-season, heavy-cropping dessert apple tree renowned for its sweet flavour and firm flesh. This variety is essentially a Cox-style apple with a unique twist, inherited from its other parent, Wyken Pippin. The apples produced by Laxton's Superb are medium-sized with a greenish base colour, flushed deep carmine and occasionally streaked with purple. The skin often displays slight russeting on the red-flushed surfaces, adding to its distinctive appearance. Unlike the flattened shape of Cox's Orange Pippin, Laxton's Superb apples have a more upright form, reminiscent of Adams Pearmain. The flesh is white-green to cream in colour, dense, and fine in texture. It is firm rather than crisp, offering a notable "appley" taste with hints of aniseed. These apples are exceptionally sweet, with complex flavours that are less brash compared to modern apple varieties and are not overly juicy.
The tree itself blossoms early in May, signalling the start of the fruiting season. Laxton's Superb is partially self-fertile, meaning it can set some fruit on its own. However, the presence of another apple variety with the same or adjacent pollination group nearby will enhance fruit set and improve cropping. Additionally, this variety boasts good resistance to canker and mildew, making it a robust choice for orchards.
