Malus domestica 'Braeburn'

The 'Braeburn' apple tree is a renowned variety celebrated for its abundant yield of bi-coloured, smooth-skinned fruits that are crisp and juicy. This popular variety is favoured for its ease of cultivation, early cropping from a young age, and excellent storage potential. The substantial harvest of flavourful apples can be collected in October and stored for up to four months.

Braeburn apples have gained international fame due to their large size and very crispy texture, complemented by a refreshing flavour. These trees require a favourable aspect and a warm autumn to fully develop. Originating from New Zealand, Braeburn apple trees also feature very attractive blossoms. Being a very late-season apple, it is best to leave the fruits on the tree for as long as possible before harvesting, as they will continue to ripen in storage. The apples are best enjoyed from late November through to spring.

In appearance, Braeburn apples are large, tall, and conical, initially olive green, turning slightly more yellow as they mature, often with a handsome red flush. The flavour is sub-acid and refreshing, with green flesh that remains solid, crunchy, and crisp even when fully ripe. As a late dessert apple with red-flushed, yellow skin and crisp, juicy, pale cream flesh, Braeburn trees produce a heavy crop in mid- to late autumn, storing well into late winter. Notably, Braeburn apple trees are self-fertile, making them an excellent choice for any orchard.
