Purple Coneflower 'Magnus'
Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus' is a variety of purple coneflower which has been cultivated to produce larger flowers (up to 10cm wide), the petals of which don't droop but grow more horizontally outward from the central cone. This deciduous perennial plant is clump forming and develops long stalks on which the large deep-pink single flowers sit. The verdant leaves are narrow and ovate.
Coneflowers usually have a central yellow-green cone around which the petals emerge, but in the case of Echinacea 'Magnus' the center disc or cone is a much darker orange-brown colour, making this quite a distinctive variety.
Echincaea 'Magnus' grows best in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun but can tolerate a little shade also. It is very attractive to bees and butterflies as well as other pollinating insects and the flowers are long-lasting.
In order to prolong blooming even into autumn, once individual flowers have faded, cut back the stems.
