Purple Coneflower
Echinacea purpurea is the standard variety of purple coneflower with light pinky-purple petals. This deciduous perennial plant is clump forming and develops long stalks on which the large single flowers sit, growing to around 12cm in diameter. The leaves are distinctive in this variety as they are covered in a coarse hair. However this often deters pests which is advantageous.
Whilst some coneflowers have a central yellow-green cone around which the petals emerge, the center disc or cone on Echinacea purpurea is a deeper golden-brown for a richer colour palette.
Echincaea purpurea grows best in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun but can tolerate a little shade also. It is very attractive to bees and butterflies as well as other pollinating insects and the flowers are long-lasting.
In order to prolong blooming even into autumn, once individual flowers have faded, cut back the stems.
