BN11 & BN7 Criteria

Published guidance for Countryside Stewardship BN11 & BN7 hedging typically includes requirements such as:

  • Hedges species native to the UK
  • No single species making up more than 70% of the total mix
  • Plants commonly specified at 45-60cm at planting
  • Typical planting density of around 6 plants per metre
  • Planting carried out during the dormant season, usually November to March

These criteria help ensure hedges establish successfully and provide long-term boundary structure.

Benefits

Under the 2025/2026 Countryside Stewardship Capital Grants, the current payment rates for hedgerow planting items are:

  • BN11 - Planting New Hedges: £22.97 per metre of hedge planted
  • BN7 - Hedgerow Gapping Up: £17.22 per metre of planted gaps in existing hedgerows

These grant rates are set by the UK government and are designed to support the costs of planting and establishing native hedges in line with scheme rules.

Many farmers use the grant contribution to cover plant costs, with remaining budget available for establishment and protections. Our team can help you plan your planting in line with government guidance.
