What is a Roof Form Tree?

The term 'roof form' refers to trees that are trained into a clear stem, with a canopy of dense foliage at the crown formed by training branches over a horizontal cane framework of equal width all round. The stems are tall, usually between 2m and 2.5m in height. Roof form trees, also referred to as Parasol or Umbrella trees are ideal for creating natural shaded areas over seating, over terraces or along pathways and are popular in both form and function, offering an attractive, living sun-shade alternative to man-made screening and shade options.

Multi-stem roof form trees offer an alternative, less formal aesthetic with multiple clear stems branching off from the main supporting stem. The stems are more naturalistic in shape compared to the straight clear stems of standard pleached or roof form trees. The canopy however, is still formed in the same way using a horizontal screen framework over which the branches and foliage are trained.

Species Information

Hornbeam roof form trees are an exceptionally popular variety of roof form tree, gracing many formal and urban gardens alike. Similar to Beech but with a deeper veined leaf and a more defined, serrated edge, Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) has vibrant green foliage forming a dense canopy that is ideal for providing privacy screening and shade. Even through the autumn and winter months, Hornbeam leaves will turn brown but cover, although reduced, will be retained as some leaves can remain on the branches until new growth pushes through in the spring, offering colour and character through the colder months.

Delivery Information

Once an order has been placed, we will contact you to arrange delivery. Delivery of all roof form trees is via a large truck due to their size, shape and weight. Lifting equipment will be needed to help unload and move the trees.

For more information around delivery, please call 01257 263 876 and ask for a roof form tree specialist. They will be able to provide costs for smaller orders and advise on lorry type, access required and lifting equipment needed to help unload the trees. Free delivery is applicable on orders over £1500. Otherwise a £450 delivery charge applies.

Please note: We recommend that any moving or lifting equipment such as a forklift, is booked for a full day not part day, as we cannot guarantee what time the trees will arrive on site on the day of delivery.
