Japanese Barberry 'Admiration'
Berberis thunbergii 'Admiration' is a popular, colourful Japanese Barberry and deserving winner of the distinguished Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Hardy and adaptable to most locations, this easy-to-grow, compact shrub's vibrant colour lasts throughout summer and intensifies in autumn. Small yellow flowers can sometimes be produced in spring or early summer, followed in autumn by crimson berries that extend the seasonal interest and are an excellent source of food for birds.
Berberis thunbergii 'Admiration's stunning foliage brings eye-catching colour to beds and borders and adds contrast and warmth to garden planting. Colourful enough to impress planted as a single plant but in multiples has a greater visual impact. Being a small shrub, it's also suitable for planting in a pot to brighten up any outside space.
Berberis 'Admiration' is best planted in full sun for development of stronger leaf colour. It will also tolerate partial shade but there will be less development of colour with leaves being greener.
This low-growing deciduous shrub will grow well in most free-draining soils. Being extremely slow-growing and tolerant of most conditions, once planted, Berberis thunbergii 'Admiration' will happily look after itself. If a trim is needed of any broken or dead shoots or just to keep to shape, pruning is best carried out after flowering.
