Red Barberry Hedging Plants Description

Berberis ottawensis x Auricoma is hardy and grows well in virtually any soil, including seaside gardens. This variety has vivid red leaves through spring and summer, with a fiery display in autumn, before losing its leaves for winter (also consider Purple Beech for similar dark foliage). It has orange berries in spring. Berberis flowers on old wood so should be pruned soon after flowering so that the new growth can develop in time for the next season. Remove about one third of the older shoots at the base.

For more information on this species, see our ultimate guide to Berberis hedging plants.

Berberis Red Leaf plants are available to buy all year round. We also stock Purple Leaf Barberry (Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea) and a whole range of colourful, prickly hedges with berries options. See also our range of evergreen hedging plants for those wanting year round cover and our section dedicated to plants for exposed conditions.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.
