Potentilla 'Goldfinger' Hedge Plants Description
The hardy Yellow Potentilla is perfect for gardens where minimal maintenance is required and provides an excellent choice for low growing informal hedging, growing to around 1.2m in height but easily maintained lower. This pretty, deciduous shrub benefits from a long flowering season from early summer through to autumn, providing lasting blooms of colour in the form of small, delicate, sunny-yellow flowers, making it a popular choice for a low growing hedge.
Potentilla 'Goldfinger' prefers moist and reasonably rich soil but is able to adapt to most soils and conditions, making it more hardy than many other species of flowering hedging. Potentilla 'Goldfinger' also has a highly durable nature and ability to tolerate drought, flood and extremely cold or windy conditions means that it is one of the few hedges that can thrive in a coastal location, making it great hedging for exposed sites.
We also have Pink, Orange & White flowering varieties of Potentilla, either as alternatives or to combine with.
These pretty yet robust plants are available all year round.
When planted in a sunny spot, the flowering on this Yellow Potentilla plant will be prolific, although the plant will grow and flower in all light conditions exceptwith the exception of deep shade.
For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section
Once established, Yellow Potentilla are compact plants requiring very little by way of care or maintenance other than a simple trim to keep to the desired shape and height, growing to a maximum of 1.5m but easy to keep under 1m as a traditionally low growing hedge.
It is important to prune at the right time, so as not to remove new growing shoots. Ideally, prune in the autumn once flowering has occurred, cutting out all the old branches at ground level. Remove shoots that have flowered to within 1.5-2.5cm (¾-1in) of the previous year's growth. To encourage optimal growth and flowering for the following year, the plant will benefit from an annual mulch or fertiliser trowelled into the soil.
