Viburnum lantana Hedge Plants Description

Viburnum lantana or the Wayfaring Tree as it is commonly known is the perfect ornamental shrub for informal hedging. It offers seasonal interest with white spring flowers that appear in domed clusters in late spring, followed by red berries that ripen to black. The grey-green, deeply toothed leaves turn red in autumn for warm seasonal colour. Viburnum lantana is ideal for including into a mixed native hedge or for relaxed, countryside style boundaries.

As Viburnum lantana produces berries, it is poplular with birds who will also seek shelter in its branches. The small tubular flowers also produce nectar for butterflies - see our entire range of flowering hedges.

This delicious, ornamental shrub is suited to a sunny position but will tolerate shade and drought once established. Choose a well drained but moist site when planting Viburnum lantana. This informal hedging shrub has a medium growth rate, achieving approximately 20-40cm each year and is suited to hedging of up to 5m in height.

For an evergreen Viburnum shrub for hedging, see our range of Viburnum Tinus.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.

Pruning Advice
Pruning Advice

Viburnum lantana is a relatively low or even no maintenance shrub or hedge and generally any pruning is best done after flowering in the spring. However, any flowering stems that you cut back will then not produce berries later in the year.

If you are space limited and need to keep the plant trimmed, you can do this by cutting around a third of the older stems each year in order to keep growth fresh. The new growth will then produce flowers and berries the following year. Do this each year and you will ensure a steady production of flowers and berries whilst keeping the plant to the desired shape and size.

If size isn't an issue, it's not necessary to trim Viburnum lantana unless you wish to trim out very old or diseased stems in which case this is best done after flowering.
