Hypericum Hedging

From May to August, Hypericum Hidcote (St John's Wort) has large yellow, 5 petalled flowers which give a good show of colour. It is good in shade, but performs even better in sun and it is suitable for any well drained soil. It will also thrive in coastal gardens. See even more plants for exposed sites. The plant is often known by its common name, St John's Wort, particularly in relation to its herbal properties.

These plants are available all year round.

Further Information

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.

Pruning Advice
Pruning Advice

Pruning a St John’s Wort (Hypericum) can vary depending on the species you’re growing. ‘Hidcote’ should be pruned in the Spring, removing any weak, old or thin growth. Shorten the remaining stems back to the base or to strong shoots. Always make your cut just above a bud. If your plant has got out of hand you can prune all the stems to ground level now.
