Euonymus europaeus Hedge Plants Description

Spindle (Euonymus europaeus) is widely recognised for its stunning autumnal colours, in which the vibrant pink capsules open-up to reveal bold-coloured orange fruits, and leaves turning from a deep green to a glowing red. The fruits are often retained well into the winter months, even after the leaves have dropped; it's a hedge plant that looks spectacular in a sunny spot but will also tolerate partial shade. For the remainder of the year, spindle boasts its unique twiggy, upright deciduous plant that showcases its dark green pointed leaves. Spindle hedging develops well in normal soil conditions and situations, although, it will also endure coastal positions and slightly wet sites. Euonymus europaeus has an average growth rate of about 45cm per annum.

During May and June, Spindle hedging begins to flower. While the autumnal tones of yellow and green are inconspicuous, they are nectar-rich and therefore, highly attractive to pollinating insects, which is excellent for a bee-friendly garden. You can view our full range of flowering hedge plants here.

It's important to note that although this plant produces beautiful, bright fruit, it's not the edible kind. Both fruit and the leaves can be harmful if eaten. So, Spindle is best appreciated visually for its beautiful and colourful nature. Aphids, as well as pollinators, can also find this hedge plant attractive, so, it's best not to plant too close to plots of growing vegetables in case there is an aphid migration to the plant crops. Aphid can become an unwanted pest.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.

Pruning Advice
Pruning Advice

Spindle should be pruned in late winter to early spring but take care not to trim from healthy growth as the plant may be stunted by hard pruning.

Simply remove any damaged or diseased wood and any shoots that are growing out of line with the general desired hedge shape. After pruning where necessary, it's advantageous to mulch into the surrounding soil and feed to give the plant a boost of nutrients and promote healthy growth.

Otherwise, Spindle is one of the hedge varieties that requires little by way of maintenance and can simply be left to grow naturally.
