French Lavender Hedge Plants Description

French Lavender (sometimes known as Spanish Lavender) has a number of differences from English Lavender hedge plants. Instead of flower spikes with narrow flowers, it has bracts on the end of the flower spikes - rather like ears. Often called Butterfly Lavender, this variety has produced distilled oil since the Middle Ages.

French Lavender is a popular variety of Lavender hedging, but we do also have the following additional varieties - English Lavender, Lavender 'Hidcote', White Lavender, and Dwarf Lavender. See even more hedge plants with flowers, as well as other fragrant hedging.

These French Lavender plants are available all year round but if bought in autumn, winter or spring, will flower in the first summer.

Additionally we now stock a series of specially selected Lavender Collections within our Garden plants range featuring several English and French Lavender varieties plus a special mixed variety pack.

Is French Lavender Evergreen?

All lavender varieties are technically classed as evergreen, as in warmer climates they retain their grey-green foliage year round. However, the cooler UK climate means Lavender plants go into dormancy from early autumn until late spring. During dormancy the foliage turns brown and twiggy, appearing to die back. This is perfectly normal and as the weather warms in late spring, your Lavender plant will once again become green with new shoots.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section. As a general rule however, smaller pots such as 2Lpots can be planted anything up to 6 plants per metre (if planting in s double staggered row) whilst larger plants require less plants per metre due their size. It all depends on the fullness of hedge you wish to achieve and the time you are happy to wait to achieve this.

Pruning Advice
Pruning Advice

French lavender is a more fragile variety, so it is best to lightly prune. Ensure that you never cut into the bare wood as this could damage or even kill the plant.

Initially, prune very lightly just after your French lavender has had its first flowering. After this, throughout the growing season keep deadheading the plant and shaping it as required.

In late August, prune it a little harder but still taking care not to prune too drastically. This will then set the plant up for the winter and encourage good, healthy growth the following year.

Lavender and Dormancy

It's important to note that when Lavender goes into dormancy from early autumn until late spring, it will become brown and twiggy .This is perfectly normal and it will become green again in the spring. Read our Hedges Direct Lavender Guide for more advice and information.
