Description
Pachysandra terminalis is the standard variety of Japanese Spurge and is an evergreen perennial giving year-round colour and structure to garden borders and beds. A fantastic ground cover plant, it spreads in a wide mat and features attractive rosette-forming foliage, made up of deeply toothed leaves to about 10cm long, which is a mid-green and slightly glossy. In summer, it produces unusual short spikes of white flowers with pretty-pinkish tips.
Pachysandra terminalis is a shade-loving perennial, so ideal for those shady beds and borders which need a bit of year-round colour and life. It will grow happily in any soil providing it's well-drained and is fairly hardy too.
This standard variety of Japanese Spurge is slightly taller growing than the 'Green Carpet' variety which is far more compact with smaller, darker-green and glossier leaves. It usually grows to about 25cm in height and 1m spread but can be taller in the right conditions. It's a very low maintenance perennial, requiring no pruning and is generally disease free. The only thing you'll need to watch for for is slugs and snails (as with many plants). If you wish to split the plant to use elsewhere in the garden, then you can divide it in the spring.
