As a general pointer, smaller pots such as 2L pots can be planted anything from 2 up to 6 plants per metre (if planting in double staggered rows), dependant on the density of hedge desired and time you want to wait for fullness to be achieved.

Pruning Advice

Hebe Red Edge should be pruned in the growing season - or right at the end of the winter dormancy period. They should not be pruned in late Autumn - nor winter months.

Hebe ‘Red Edge', also sometimes referred to as shrubby Veronica, is a compact and mound-forming evergreen shrub with white and lilac-tinged flower spikes from summer onwards. Its neat and uniform leaves have a distinct red margin, which is more pronounced in winter for additional seasonal interest. Hebe ‘Red Edge' makes a fantastic informal, evergreen flowering hedge or standalone shrub, perfect for adding a distinguishing feature to any outside space.

Hebe albicans 'Red Edge' Evergreen Flowering Hedge Plants Description

Hebe albicans 'Red Edge' is an attractive evergreen flowering plant to have in the garden, which makes an equally pretty low-growing hedge or standalone shrub. It's the perfect plant to draw attention, creating a dramatic focal point. It blooms profusely from late summer into late autumn with long, white tapered flower spikes tinged with lilac and is popular for both its unique and stunning flowers and its neat, compact foliage of green with undertones of blue-grey.

Hebe 'Red Edge' is a very compact shrub only growing to around 50cm in height and spread, so is perfect for ground cover or low-level hedging. When growing Hebe 'Red Edge' as a hedge, it looks its best when neatened up into a series of mounds or a rounded hedge rather than have hard edges imposed on it and can be left to its natural form or shaped when grown as a shrub. Either way, it's always eye-catching!

This lovely evergreen flowering hedge plant or shrub will, like most Hebe species, handle a variety of weather conditions and is an excellent choice for a coastal garden being tolerant of salt-laden air. Hebe albicans 'Red Edge' prefers sunny or partly shaded conditions and moist, well-drained soil. It will grow happily in either a sheltered or exposed location, but may need a little protection from fierce or cold winter winds. Initially Hebe 'Red Edge' is a little faster growing, however once it reaches maturity and its maximum height its growth slows considerably at which point this lovely Hebe becomes very low maintenance yet extremely rewarding.

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.
Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
Instant
Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
