Fuchsia magellanica is good in all soils (other than wet) and mild situations other than dense shade. It is thought to be reasonably resistant to rabbits (although no guarantees!).

Pruning Advice
Fuchsia should be pruned in early to mid spring to cut back last years flowering stems. Ensure any weak or dead growth is also removed back to ground level to promote stronger new growth.

Fuchsia magellanica Hedge Plants Description
Fuchsia magellanica is an attractive and hardy fuchsia variety that makes a beautiful ornamental hedge or specimen shrub. Dark-green foliage provides the perfect counterpoint to dainty pink and purple pendant-shaped flowers on long, elegant stems, which attract bees and other insects during the summer months. Fuchsia magellanica makes not only a beautiful hedge, but an eye-catching addition to flowerbeds and mixed borders.
Growing between 20-40cm per year, the upright growth habits of Fuchsia magellanica means that it can reach a height of up to 3m, although it can be hard-pruned after flowering to maintain it at a more manageable height of 1.5-2m. Hardy Fuchsia thrives particularly well in coastal locations, and can happily grow in any normal, moist soil types and in partial shade and sheltered areas.

Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.

Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.

Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.
