Description
Cortaderia selloana 'Pumila' is a dwarf variety of Pampas Grass that originated in South America and is a recipient of the RHS 'Award of Garden Merit'. It is an evergreen perennial grass, forming a dense clump of arching, narrow, deep-green leaves to 50cm length from which are borne pale, cream feathery plumes on long stems to around 1.2m in height in summer.
Cortaderia selloana 'Pumila' is an increasingly popular and versatile planting option as either an eye-catching centrepiece, add height to borders or to form a natural privacy screen. It certainly delights visually with its different textures and soft movement and can enhance a calming space.
This beautiful dwarf Pampas Grass will grow well in most soil types and has a good tolerance to both salty air or drought making it an excellent choice for warmer locations or those by the coast. It prefers a drier soil and a sunny location in which to thrive and will reach a maximum height and spread of around 1.5m x 1.2m.
Ensure you protect the crown of young plants in winter with a thick layer of mulch. Once established, it is hardier. Trim the spent flowers in spring and ensure any debris is removed from around the base so that the plant has room to grow. It's important to note that the leaves edges are razor-sharp so wear thick gardening gloves when trimming or cutting back the stems.

Pruning Advice
It is important in the first year of growth to protect the crown of young plants with a good layer of dry mulch in winter. Once the plant is more established it will become much hardier.
To tidy the plant up, in early spring, remove the spent flower stems. Ensure that all spent plant debris is removed from the base of the plant so that growth is not restricted or choked.
The leaves are somewhat razor-edged so it is necessary to wear good, thick gardening gloves when undertaking trimming and stem removal.
