Amelanchier lamarckii Hedging Plants

Amelanchier lamarckii bursts into life in spring, typically between March and April. Stunning white star-shaped flowers blossom in full conical heads, and new coppery pink and silky leaves come alive before maturing into green and showcasing autumnal tones of vibrant red and orange. The Juneberry fruits are edible and commonly used to make one of the nation's favourite drinks, Gin. The fruits produced by Amelanchier taste like apples and are dark red in summer, turning purple/ black in autumn. Birds also enjoy the Juneberry fruits and are likely to strip it bare before the fruits fully ripen.

We recommend planting Juneberry amongst an assortment of native hedge plants to receive countless benefits which a mixed native feature brings to a garden. Juneberry can also act as an effective garden screen and is a wildlife-friendly hedge.

It is advisable to plant Amelanchier lamarckii in a moist, but drained soil to sustain healthy growth. Exposed areas or a sheltered site with full sun coverage is also recommended. This hedging plant enjoys an average growth rate of 30-40cm per year and attains heights of 1-4m.

Amelanchier lamarckii is a low-maintenance shrub, and Hedges Direct recommends trimming this species between late winter and early spring.

You’ll see our recommended planting densities for each size and root type listed in the product grid. We suggest that you use these as a guide, taking into consideration how long you’re willing to wait to see your finished hedge. As a rough indication bare roots can be planted at anything from 3 to 7 per metre and cell grown between 4 and 6 - the higher densities here would need to be planted in a double staggered row or zig-zag.

For more information on planting distances please see our planting density advice section.
