Root types explained.
-
Bare root
Field grown, bare roots are young plants that are only planted when they are dormant, from autumn to spring. We lift bare root plants and despatch them during the season but they can be pre-ordered in summer. As they are cheaper to grow, they are one of our most affordable hedge planting options.
-
Pot grown
Pot grown plants can be planted year round and make a convenient option. They come in a wide range of sizes, from 10cm to 2.5m so they're suitable for the majority of planting requirements.
-
Root ball
Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. They are mature plants that provide dense coverage very early on, ideal for when you need a thick hedge quickly.
-
Instant
Grown in troughs or bags that measure 50cm-1 metre in length and carefully clipped during the growing season. Our instant hedging troughs create a dramatic, instant hedge effect.

Description
Golden Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium 'Aureum'), also affectionately known as Yellow Privet, is a lively twist on the traditional hedge with its bright green leaves boldly outlined in yellow. This variegated hedge species lights up any garden with its cheerful foliage and clusters of creamy white flowers that bloom in July, attracting bees and butterflies alike to enhance biodiversity in your garden.
Whether you’re creating a formal hedge or a vibrant garden border, Ligustrum ovalifolium adapts beautifully. When clipped, it forms a dense, structured hedge that provides excellent privacy and noise reduction. Golden Privet hedges are also particularly resilient to pollution, making them a great fit for urban gardens where space is at a premium and tranquillity is treasured. It’s less vigorous than its green counterpart – Common Privet – with a growth rate of 20-40cm per year. For a less formal alternative, you might want to check out Wild Privet instead.
Golden Privet hedging prefers well-drained, moist soils but is surprisingly adaptable and can flourish in all but the wettest conditions. It's also tolerant of different light conditions, from full sun to partial shade, allowing it flexibility in garden placement. Its leaves are harmful to humans and pets if eaten, so keep this in mind when planting. Read our hedge-planting tips here.
We have pot-grown and bare-root Golden Privet hedge plants available. Our pot-grown plants have the recommended densities shown, but you can increase or reduce this density depending on your level of patience.*
*Bare-root and root-ball stock are subject to availability and may change, but are generally available from autumn through to spring.

Pruning Advice
Trim Ligustrum Ovalifolium 'Aureum' 2 to 3 times a year during the summer when it’s in growing season to keep it in tip-top shape. This will encourage dense and healthy growth.
If your Golden Privet has become a bit unruly, a more significant cutback in early spring can rejuvenate it, giving you lush, fresh growth by the time summer rolls around.
Please note that Golden Privet can defoliate when re-planted, especially bare-root varieties, but it’ll recover in Spring.
