Pruning Advice
The best time to trim Weigela florida 'Variegata’ is after flowering. Simply cut back the stems to where there is a healthy bud. You can cut the stems back to around a third of their growth if required. Additionally, each year, you should also completely cut back around a fifth of older stems down to ground level. By doing this you are undertaking an ongoing rejuvenation of the plant which will ensure that you have new, productive and healthy growth each season as Weigela looks its best on younger stems.
Keep an eye out for and cut away any weak offshoots that look as though they are not likely to bud, to concentrate the growth into stronger stems. Also, remove any dead, diseased or crossing branches that may inhibit growth or cause damage to the main stem.

Weigela florida 'Variegata'
Weigela florida 'Minor Black' is a compact and colourful variety of Weigela featuring deep purple-green foliage and contrasting vivid pink funnel-shaped flowers. The flowers adorn the plant in abundance in late spring and early summer offering a rich source of nectar to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.
Growing to just 75cm height and spread, Weigela florida 'Minor Black' is a small deciduous shrub with lots of character. Its rounded compact form and distinctive colours are ideal for front of border planting or mixed low shrub borders. However, it's also well-suited to raised beds and can be grown in a pot for a colourful addition to patio planting or to brighten any outdoor space.
Weigela florida 'Minor Black' is exceptionally easy to grow and will grow in most positions and locations including shade. However, it prefers sun or dappled shade for the best colour, and a slightly acidic well-drained soil. Trimming is best carried out after flowering at which point it can be cut back to a healthy bud, even down to around a third of the stem.
We'd also recommend cutting at least a fifth of the older stems down to ground level each year which will continually rejuvenate the plant. This will encourage fresh new shoots and branches to grow, in order to keep a bushy, healthy and productive plant and Weigela also looks its best on younger stems. Mulch annually with rotted manure or compost in spring.
