Wisteria Sinesis
The Topiary Standard Wisteria sinensis, commonly known as the Chinese Wisteria, is a beloved climber from the Far East, highly regarded for its spectacular and fragrant cascades of lavender or white flowers that bloom in spring and early summer. These stunning racemes emerge from bare stems, with the pale green, divided leaves appearing only after the flowering period, and turning a vibrant yellow in the autumn. Introduced to the West by East India Company agents in 1816, this vigorous, deciduous climber features twining stems that require support from wires or trellis, making it ideal for growing against the side of a house or along a garden fence.
Wisteria sinensis is well-suited to the UK climate, boasting a hardy rating of H6. However, it is important to shelter the plant during extreme cold snaps. The plant thrives in well-drained soil and benefits from a biannual trim to maintain its shape and health. While Wisteria sinensis is fast-growing, it can be slow to establish and may take several years to flower when grown from seed. Fortunately, mature plants supplied are already capable of flowering.
Gardeners should be aware that Wisteria sinensis is toxic if ingested, causing severe discomfort, and can be susceptible to pests and diseases, including scale insects. Regular monitoring and adherence to pruning guides are essential for optimal care. Despite these considerations, the Chinese Wisteria remains a cherished addition to any garden, offering a breathtaking display and enchanting fragrance each year.
