Description
For a true flowering spectacle in early spring, Spiraea x cinerea 'Grefsheim' is a superb choice. Its long, graceful arching branches and lance-like grey-green leaves are almost fully obscured by swathes of small white flowers, which erupt en masse to create one of the earliest flowering displays of any shrub.
This easy-to-grow deciduous shrub is happy in any location, preferring full sun or partial shade, and will grow well in any soil except clay as long as moist and well-drained. It's perfect for planting in beds and borders or even on slopes and is generally pest and disease free, making this a very popular choice with gardeners of all skill level and experience.
Spiraea 'Grefsheim' is a compact shrub and will grow to an average height and spread of around 1m. Prune immediately after flowering, cutting spent stems back to a healthy bud or young shoot further down. Also cut out around 20% of old or ageing stems each year to keep the shrub fresh and healthy.
